Songs That Make Me Happy [BBC]

Bout time I dug into my contribution to the Beardian Blogger Collective’s third theme, songs that make me happy.

5. Fat Bottom Girls – Queen

What can I say about Queen? This band never gets old, they have some beautiful songs. And Fat Bottom Girls is my favorite, it reminds me of good times. One of them being when in the seventh grade my math teacher (Mr. Matt Biondi, look him up) and I broke out singing it in the middle of class. It’s such a great song, and it always puts a smile on my face.

4. Big Rock Candy Mountain- Harry McClintock

I think this one explains itself, chipper folk song about a Hobo paradise. I first heard this song on the soundtrack for O, Brother Where Art Thou?, which is a great movie. This song I can spend an hour or so listening to on repeat (and I have done so),  it’s just hard not to love.

3. Misty Mountain Hop- Led Zeppelin

Long my favorite Led Zeppelin song. This was the first song that really hooked me then and forever on Led Zeppelin. This song. Man, this song. I love it so much, first hearing it in the 6th grade, when I first really started listening to Zeppelin. I love the lyrics and the way that Plant sings it and how the instrumentals are so rolling and care-free.

2. Get Rhythm – Johnny Cash

This makes me smile every time I hear “heeeeeeeey, get rhythm”. Though it does make me sad that I have no rhythm, I can’t stay mad at Johnny Cash. It always reminds me to get rhythm when I get the blues. Hurhurhur.

1. Kaw-Liga – Hank Williams Jr.

Yes, I prefer the Hank Williams Jr cover of the song than the Hank Williams Sr original. This song is really sad, but it’s got a lot of humor and is so upbeat I can’t help but smile at it. And also sing with those high notes. KAW-LIGA WHOOOOOOOO.

5. Kylesa Hollow Severer T-shirt.

Got it off Shirt Killer, illustrated by one of  my idols: Mr. John Dyer Baizley, an amazing artist.

Shit, fuck, RAGE. I lost it very recently. It was late and dark, I grab my clothes to change out of my uniform but didn’t, I must have dropped it in the parking lot at the CAP building coming back to the car not even a week ago yesterday. Now I am sad.

RIP, marvelous shirt. You shall be fondly remembered.

4. Clam Shell Geode

My sister and my dad bought it for me in Missouri, it’s a geode that grew inside of a fossilized clam shell. It’s really neat, and a marvelous addition to my rock collection.

Cool, eh?

3. Air Force Challenge Coin. Read about Challenge Coins.

This coin was given to my by my cousin who is an optometrist in the military. It was presented to him by a 3-star general. Because there aren’t a terribly large number of optometrists in the Air Force, this is a bit of a rarity. I received it upon completion of my first Basic Encampment with the Civil Air Patrol, which is something of a 7 day crash course of Basic Training. It’s one of my prized possessions, I was very proud to receive it and the summer I received it I carried it with me everywhere. I now keep it safe and sound in a Zales padded box. I like to look at it when I’m not feeling too hot, it makes me feel better.

The front reads "United States Air Force Ophthalmic Services"; the back reads "If You Can't See 'Em, You Can't Shoot 'Em" as well as "We Are Vision Experts".

2. My custom skateboard.

My first attempt at doing a skateboard. I really like how it has come out so far. My friend gave me a Mini-Logo, standard size skateboard. Used, but good enough for my purposes. I sanded the whole thing down, created custom line art, prepared it with about 6 coats of sanding sealer. Then realized I wanted to stain the top of the board, so sanded it back down, stained it Cabernet red, and sealed it marine grade varnish. I painted the bottom white, re-did my line art onto the board, inked it, then I painted it, then I lacquered it on the suggestion of the paint guy at Home Depot. Bad idea. Lacquer is hard. Therefore it is brittle. Therefore it chips. Fuck. So I applied the grip tape to the top of the board. And by “grip tape” I mean, I took more of the varnish mixed in some Green Sand from the Green Sand Beach down south and applied that in a sectioned off pattern.

The only things left is application of some of that varnish to the bottom of the board for optimum protection, my friend Bryden is giving me some heavy Independent Trucks which I am powder coating black and then I’m going to purchase some good bearings and dark red wheels to go onto it.

Yeah. I did that.

1. Early model compound bow.

I’m really into archery. On a vacation up in the Thousand Islands New York, my folks and I went to a Wooden Boat Show, which is guys bringing in all their crazy expensive wooden boats and showing them off. There was a stand that selling fishing lures and things of that nature. I noticed behind him he had a table piled (literally) with bows. After sifting through the pile of cheap shit bows I came across 2 gems:

1. a Ben Pearson custom recurve Bear, stained green and grey, beautiful. I regularly shoot it.

2. an early model compound bow. Antique. From the ’70s, solid wood, dual-cams, never once been shot. Original box, all original stickers and everything.

We bought a 75 dollar antique lure for my cousin (the one that gave me the challenge coin), and the guy made us a deal, if we bought both of the bows he’d knock off $50 from the price and throw in the lure for free. Needless to say, we took the deal. It’s one of the coolest things I own.

Will get pictures when I’m not too lazy to take it down from the top of my closet.
